IPEmotion RT - the data logger software

Modular ‒ system-integrated - groundbreaking

With IPEmotion RT, IPETRONIK launch a completely new data logger software. It is based on the well established measurement data and acquisition software IPEmotion but takes a unique and groundbreaking approach: For the first time, data logger software and PC-based measurement software will use the same source code platform, allowing our customers to use IPEmotion on their Windows PCs and the Linux-based data logger series with its wide range of functions. In addition to that, IPEmotion RT is the first OS-independent software supporting Linux 64-bit systems. The innovative multilayer architecture enables the adaptation to other operating systems. With its data logger software RT, IPETRONIK sets new standards regarding functionality, development time, and quality management.

Shared platform for test bench & fleet testing

The shared software platform of measurement PC and data logger offers many advantages for test bench measurements as well as mobile applications in road tests. It ensures that different applications provide the same measurement results. Reusing fleet test measurement configurations and data for other measurements (e.g. with the hardware in the loop method (HiL) for fixed test benches) increases efficiency. The possibility to exchange measurement configurations and data formats between the systems facilitates the validation and the comparability of measurement data, regardless of where they have been acquired.

Description

IPEmotion RT ist the latest data logger software from IPETRONIK. This platform offers extensive functions like for example the PlugIn concept which is well-known from IPEmotion PC Software. For the first time it makes it possible to use it on a linux embedded operating system with data logger sequence control.

Synergy effects with unique advantages

IPEmotion RT is a groundbreaking development. Using one platform for the data logger measurement hardware and the PC
measurement software creates unique advantages:

1. Simultaneous availability on logger & PC

New functions will now only have to be developed once in order to be available to Windows as well as Linux operating systems, thanks to the shared source code platform. This unified concept of operations ensures that the same functions can be executed on different platforms, providing identical and repeatable measurement results. All functions are available for all RT data logger product lines.

 

2. Shorter development times

The availability of extensive libraries facilitates the integration of new system components (such as cameras, modems, or specific measurement systems) in Linux. Due to the modular structure, several development teams can work on different areas without affecting other functions.

 

3. Double test depth

The shared function development and source code platform cause important synergies for test execution and automation. For the first time, the same test programs can be used for the PC and the data logger software. The COM interface allows the test automation to check many functions so that the test execution cycles are reduced and the test coverage is doubled.

 

4. Investment protection

The software IPEmotion RT will be used by all IPETRONIK data loggers in the future. With the loggers IPElog2, M-LOG V3, and IPEhub2, several devices with IPEmotion RT are already available. Further new logger developments in collaboration with CAETEC will also be equipped with the new software. Our customers can upgrade their existing hardware to RT without any problems.

IPEmotion RT – new features

IPEmotion RT provides many new features compared to its predecessor. These are the most important ones:

100 kHz inputs on the data logger

Thanks to the X PlugIn integration and the X-LINK technology, it is now possible to operate CAN and Ethernet modules with the logger and record dynamic signals with up to 100 kHz. The X module integration offers new ways to handle multi-channel measurement applications with high sample rates on the logger, which is especially relevant for acoustic measurements or RLDA tests.

PlugIn interface for computational models

With IPEmotion RT, the data logger provides a PlugIn interface for the user to integrate their own algorithms as well as MATLAB or Simulink models via DLL, meaning that the logger can work as a stand-alone measurement system that can not only store raw data but also do complex calculations and analyses beyond the standard formula pool.

Multiple IP and USB video camera inputs

Due to the growing market and the development of self-driving vehicles, the automotive industry is changing rapidly. The integration of image and video data in measurement and test applications plays an increasingly important role. With IPEmotion RT, measurement data from the vehicle bus networks can be combined with ambient data by integrating multiple video streams in HD quality.

Bus traffic simulation and signal output

With the triggered bus traffic output, a bus data stream from a stored traffic file can be outputted in the ASCII format. This function allows the user to simulate control unit components as well as network areas. Combined with the additional Control module and its function generators, it is possible to output free signal formulas from recorded measurement files.

Measurement file import via network drive

The measurement data storage is partitioned into two parts. The primary memory stores raw data. This format provides high security against corrupt measurement files that can result from a hard shutdown. The secondary memory stores the data in the IPEmotion .ZIPRT format and can be accessed via a network drive, allowing the user to select specific files to be copied for further analysis.

Data logger web interface

In addition to the native Android and iOS apps, the data logger will also be equipped with a web browser built with the cross-platform web app technology and offering all the display tools and configurations. Simply enter the URL address in the browser to open the web front end on any PC, mobile phone, or tablet via WiFi. The responsive design adapts to the size of the screen. With the help of this development, we are planning to provide worldwide access to online data and remote control of data loggers in the near future.

IPEmotion RT – practical improvements

In addition to the new functions, many well-proven features have become more user-friendly and easier to handle, including:

Consistent data logger software updates

IPEmotion RT includes a complete IPEmotion RT logger image with driver, FPGA, PIC, modem, and further relevant software components, which can be transferred to the logger in case of a software update. This ensures that all tested components in their respective versions are on the device and prevents updates of software subcomponents,  reducing error-proneness. Image updates can be done via Ethernet, PC connection, or USB flash drive.

Software update for measurement modules

With IPEmotion RT, all measurement modules directly connected to the logger can be equipped with the latest software version. This way, complete measurement systems or module chains connected to the logger can be updated without having to change the cabling or switching to CAN cards and Ethernet interfaces.

Access to all measurement module functions

All functions of the CAN- and Ethernet-based measurement modules can now be used on the logger, including TEDS detection, offset adjustment, or shunt check. The comfortable implementation of the TEDS and adjustment functions makes the configuration a lot easier.

Support file and diagnostics

To be able to provide exact system information, IPEmotion RT has an extensive support file including all the important information for system diagnostics. One vital part is the connection to the bus networks and control units where all sent and received connection communication messages are stored as traffic stream, optimizing the source analysis for control unit communication errors.

Measurement files with integrated NML messages

As soon as the bus inputs are set to NML (NoMessageLost), all the traffic will be stored in one measurement file instead of separating NML/Quickstart data and main storage group as with TESTdrive. In addition to that, NML and Quickstart traffic is stored together as converted signals for a more convenient analysis.

IPEmotion RT licensing (for data loggers)

With IPEmotion RT, the data logger licensing will be a lot easier, too.

With IPEmotion RT, the data logger licensing will be a lot easier, too. The licenses will be provided via the myIPE web portal and can be activated by entering the key on the logger – neither communication with the internet or the IPETRONIK website nor the transmission of a license configuration file necessary. This way, a logger can be upgraded with new license functions in no time at all, worldwide. Instead of many individual functions and options, you now have one basic package for each logger series with all the necessary measurement inputs/interfaces and basic functions to be able to work with the logger. Additional physical measurement inputs (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, ETH) and extensions can be purchased.

Major release versioning for RT

The well-proven IPEmotion major release versioning will also be established for IPEmotion RT. Every year in March, a major release will be offered for both IPEmotion and IPEmotion RT. Customers with a maintenance contract for the IPEmotion RT Basic package can update their loggers to the latest version. Customers without a maintenance contract will nevertheless profit from a two-year support period within which bug fixes for the major release will be provided. However, new functions will only be implemented in a new major release version.

License sharing function

In order to make the licensing and the management of your license keys for the well-known IPEmotion and the new IPEmotion RT desktop software as easy as possible, we have developed a license sharing function, allowing our customers to use their existing IPEmotion licenses for RT desktop and therefore avoiding additional costs for the change.

Overview of the IPEmotion RT.UI editions (for PC)

To configure the IPEmotion RT data loggers, an IPEmotion RT.UI desktop software is needed. It will be available in the well-known IPEmotion editions (Basic, Standard, Professional). With the free basic edition, all of our loggers can be configured. However, similar to the IPEmotion basic edition, there are some limitations, such as max. 20 display pages for webserver tools, max. 250 measurement channels for online display, and max. 1 screen with up to 10 channels for the offline data analysis.
